Palace maintains Binay suspension follows ‘rule of law’
Quezon City (18 October) -- Malacañang maintained that the suspension of Makati City Mayor Jejomar Binay followed due process as it appealed for calm and sobriety among the local executive’s supporters.
"This is a matter of the rule of law and not the rule of men. There is no political vendetta involved and hopefully, justice will be upheld," Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said in a statement.
The 60-day preventive suspension by the Department of Interior and Local Government Tuesday took out Makati’s entire administration since it also included Vice Mayor Ernesto Mercado and the 16-member city council.
The opposition immediately accused the government of political repression.
But Bunye insisted all legal procedures were followed in suspending Binay and that the mayor’s rights were not violated.
He added that Binay has recourse to all legal avenues.
"So let calm, prudence and sobriety prevail," he said. (PIA) [top]
