POEA steps up information caravan in Mindanao

By Cathy Apelacio

General Santos City (20 October) -- The Philippines Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) is reinforcing its "preventive approach in curbing illegal recruitment" through massive information drive.

POEA Administrator Rosalinda Dimapilis-Baldoz is confident that preventive approach through seminars will enable aspiring overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) make an "informed and intelligent decisions about overseas employment."

Headway is POEA joint venture with partners at the grassroots level in Mindanao through the conduct of pre-employment orientation seminars (PEOS) nationwide.

Baldoz is hopeful that with the PEOS caravan in Mindanao, it will have a big leap in the number of attendees which will set off in General Santos City and will end in Davao City.

"PEOS as a government intervention is aimed at providing information on labor and employment condition, harsh migration realities, anti-illegal recruitment practices among others to adequately prepare would-be OFWs into making informed and intelligent decisions about overseas employment," she said.

The PEOS discusses on "challenges, difficulties and risks and social costs in working overseas targeting the vulnerable skills and harsh markets" that the applicants should be concerned about.

Baldoz also saw the need to sustain the existing partnerships with the local government units particularly the Public Employment Service Office (PESO), the academe, church and key non-government organizations.

She said these institutional linkages are vital in support of the anti-illegal recruitment campaign that has already been gaining ground at the grassroots level.

The POEA also implements "a year-round schedule of Pre-Employment Orientation Seminars at the local level." Apart from the PEOS, the conduct of Capability Enhancement for PESO managers will also be held simultaneously in General Santos City.

The activity, a POEA insider explained, aims to update managers "on recent overseas employment policies and program, and equip them with tools and techniques in the implementation of the pre-employment orientation program at the local level."

PESO Managers who underwent the training are expected to conduct PEOS in their respective area of responsibility, the POEA chief said. (PIA SarGen) [top]
