San Fernando City, La Union (20 October) -- In the recently concluded World Food Day On-the-Spot Poster-Making Contest, Region I made it by winning the "Best Poster for Luzon Award in the National level.
The winning poster entry is created by Angelica V. Agulto, a grade six student of Agoo Central East School, Agoo, La Union. Same entry was chosen as one of the top three winners in the Regional level held last October 2, 2006 in the City of San Fernando, Vida Bacal, Information Officer, Department of Agriculture (DA) Regional Field Unit I, said.
According to Bacal, only two of the top three winners in the regional level were chosen for the national level, that of Agulto's entry, together with the entry of Donita Rose Inakay, Grade six pupil from Christ the King College, San Fernando City.
Interpreting this year's theme "Invest in Agriculture for Food Security", Bacal said that Agulto's handwork carries the importance and advantage of investing in agriculture, where she painted a "pot of money where abundant riches flowed down like water through the fields showing a bounty harvest, healthy livestock and fishes, providing the farmer-investor a secured income and future."
Department of Agriculture Secretary Domingo F. Panganiban presented the awards to the winners in the national awarding held last October 16, 2006 at the DA Central office, Bacal mentioned.
Agulto received a cash prize of P10,000 plus a trophy and plaque for her school given by the Food and Agriculture Office (FAO), which includes an all-expense educational tour for all the winners granted by the National Agricultural and Fishery Council (NAFC), Bacal explained.
This contest is a yearly activity conducted by DA in collaboration with the Department of Education (DepEd) to enhace awareness among students on the importance of Agriculture in achieving our goal for food security, in line with President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's Millenium Development Goals focusing on extreme-poverty and hunger.
