People’s cooperation necessary to counter terrorist plans

by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (20 October) -- National Security Adviser Norberto Gonzales has called on the public to give their full cooperation in providing vital intelligence information to preempt and frustrate terrorist plans.

Gonzales sounded the call amidst the assessment made by Britain that the terror plots in the country may be in its deadly stage after authorities seized in Zamboanga City 20 kgs. of chemicals for making bombs.

“Defeating terrorism lies not only in the hands of the law-enforcement authorities but also in the hands of a vigilant and cooperating public,” he stressed.

Meanwhile, he said, proactive security measures are already in place in securing vital infrastructures, i.e., airports, ports, power plants and transmission lines and cell sites for communication along with the population centers like malls, market and schools.

Gonzales was in the city to talk on the Updates on National Security during the Mindanao Leaders’ Forum on Security and Terrorism scheduled Oct. 18-19, 2006.

The activity was participated in by the local chief executives of the different provinces and highly urbanized cities of Mindanao, as well as the regional heads of the Dept. of Interior and Local Government (DILG) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) in the island. (PIA 10) [top]
