by Rutchie Cabahug-Aguhob

Cagayan de Oro City (20 October) -- Ten-year old Soon Yi Jurado, a Grade V pupil of the South City Central School bested four others in the recent Draw and Tell Contest conducted by the Regional Committee for the Welfare of Children, region 10 (RCWC-10), at SM City, Cagayan de Oro.

Part of this year’s October Children’s Month celebration, the contest which centered on the theme “Bright Child: Yaman ng Pamilya, Yaman ng Bansa” was participated in by elementary students of Cagayan de Oro with ages below 13 years old who are currently enrolled during the school year 2006-2007.

Participants of the contest were pre-selected through the endorsements of the District Schools Supervisors from the Dept. of Education, in the case of those who come from the public schools, while those from the private schools were pre-identified by RCWC-10.

After the drawing, contestants were given the chance to orally interpret their work. Jurado’s drawing which depicted the current state of children on an illustration board using an oil pastel easily won the nod of the judges who are among the members of RCWC-10.

Entries were judged on the following criteria: concept on the relevance to the theme with oral interpretation, 50%, visual impact, color harmony and arrangement of drawings, 30% and originality or use of unique/uncommon symbols, 20%.

Wining second place in the contest is 11-year old Paulynne Aguhob, a Grade VI pupil from Xavier University Grade School (XUHS) while the other winners are: 11-year old Theresa Baluyos, GradeV, Angelicum Learing Centre (ALC), Leslie Daayata, Grade VI, Lourdes College Grade School (LCGS) and Jethro Linaac, Grade V, Oro Christian Grade School (OGS).
