Sto. Tomas supports international poverty alleviation campaign

Davao City (21 October) -- "Let's stand up and fight poverty!"

This was the battle-cry of Mayor Maximo M. Estela of Sto. Tomas during the celebration of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty program held at the Municipal Ground, Sto. Tomas, Davao del Norte on October 16, 2006.

People from different line agencies, the academe, NGO's and other personalities were involved during the significant event. Highlights to this affair was the mass participation of the people of Sto. Tomas in enunciating the STAND UP Pledge in support to defeat extreme poverty.

"Solving the problem of poverty is not only the responsibility of the government. It's everybody's responsibility," stressed the mayor when he delivered his speech to the people of Sto. Tomas.

The STAND UP was launched by the United Nations Millennium Campaign. It's an exciting challenge to set an official Guinness World Record for the greatest number of people to stand up against poverty and for the millennium development goals.

The purpose of the action is to raise awareness of the Millennium Development Goals and to publicly demonstrate to policy makers the growing global support for the eradication of poverty. Thus, the municipal government of Sto. Tomas felt the need to take part on this magnanimous event.

Furthermore, Mr. Joel Bayanay, Municipal Administrator said that " Sto. Tomas is lucky that all the programs of the LGU caters to the needs of the local constituents, thru the leadership of the Mayor Estela and the Municipal Officials. He cited some of the National Projects that the LGU has benefited- MINSSAD Projects implemented to various schools and barangays such as Construction of school buildings, farm to market roads, health centers and the livelihood programs. The program ended with a hope to each and everyone in the community of Sto. Tomas take full responsibility and take part in alleviating poverty…. (MIO - Sto. Tomas) [top]
