PIA Press Release

November is Mass Drug Administration month

by Robert E. Roperos

BUTUAN CITY (October 23) -- The Department of Health (DOH) Center for Health Development-Caraga will spearhead the celebration of Mass Drug Administration (MDA) for filariasis next month pursuant to Executive Order No. 369 issued by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in 2004.

According to Dr. Leonita Gorgolon, DOH-Caraga Regional Director said the directive from the Office of the President is the basis for the coordinated drive among the specified government agencies and organizations in the conduct of the annual MDAs and related activities until the disease is eliminated by the year 2010.

It can be recalled that based on EO 369, one of the strategies mentioned in eliminating filariasis is through Mass Treatment using a combination of Diethylcarbamazine Citrate (DEC) and Albendazole annually for five years which has been pilot tested in 2000 and formally started in 2001 in selected municipalities/ provinces.

The directive also stated that "in order to facilitate program management, social mobilization, drug reapplication, distribution and to epidemiologically control the disease, the Global experts in consultation with regional coordinators, LGUs and other stakeholders, recommended that a month each year be concentrated for Mass Treatment for filariasis and other anti-filariasis activities".

With this development, DOH shall lead in the implementation of the activity with the assistance of the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG), Department of Education (DepEd), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), Department of National Defense (DND), Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Local Government Units and organizations, and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA).
