NIT prexy, LCEs welcome delegates to the SCUAA 2006

By Lanie Pitao-Tupaz

Naval, Biliran (23 October) -- President of the Naval Institute of Technology (NIT), Dr. Edita S. Genson as well as the provincial Governor of Biliran, Dr. Rogelio Espina and Naval Mayor Gerardo Espina, Sr., welcome the more than 3000 participants representing the 11 delegations of the entire Eastern Visayas region to the 2006 Regional State Colleges and Universities Athletics Association (SCUAA) which formally opened on October 22, at the NIT grounds.

In her welcome address, Dr. Genson revealed that despite these difficult times she took pride in hosting the 2006 regional SCUAA meet. Though itís a great challenge for the Biliranons to host this big event, our dynamic leaders to include the young Congressman Gerardo Espina, Jr., wonít accept failure nor settle for mediocrity.

It is in this context that Dr. Genson committed to the participants that their stay in the island paradise of Biliran, the host province of the 2006 SCUAA meet, will be rewarding and personally meaningful.

Participants to this meet must not only rest on the laurels but to be more responsive and resilient for the continued growth and accelerated development of the Philippine sports since sports is part and parcel of people empowerment. And since the youth are considered to be the vanguard and most important resource of the country must be physically, mentally, socially and morally turned up, Dr. Genson added.

Dr. Genson hopes that through the values of solidarity and teamwork in sports competitions, these youth may learn to appreciate the values of self discipline, national discipline and national unity.

She also hopes that the competition will not be measured by victories and records but by the extent of how we help our athletes improve their skills and become better people in contribution to building the nation and providing a nurturing and affirming atmosphere, and a confidence building experience.

For his part, Governor Rogelio Espina of the province of Biliran who delivered a welcome message congratulated all the participants for having joined in this event. He also stressed the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship in this competition and not rest on whether they win or loose.

Gov. Espina announced on that very same occasion that the provincial government of Biliran will be providing NIT an additional funding next month in the amount of P500,000 for the construction of students center which is a requirement for the conversion of NIT into a state university.

Congressman Gerardo Espina, Jr. of the lone district of Biliran is also working for NIT to be converted into a state university very soon.

Meanwhile, Mayor Gerardo Espina, Sr. of the host municipality of Naval, shared with the participants four elements of personality development. These include development of spirituality, and divinity in all human beings; physical conditioning; development of the heart of the human being; and the development of mental capability.

These all he said, make man succeed in his chosen field. But it is not in winning that makes the winner a better person than the loser but it is in how you have won and how you humbled yourself in winning.

Mayor Espina of Naval hopes the participants may develop fond memories in their short stay in Naval of the island province of Biliran.

This yearís participants to the 2006 SCUAA meet include LNU, LSU, UEP, SLSU, NIT, PIT, EVSU, SSU, ESSU, SSCAF, AND TTMIST. (PIA Biliran) [top]
