PIA Press Release

Surigao Sur Red Cross distributes food to fire victims

by Jose Jemuel Dael

Agusan del Sur (October 25) -- Victims of fire that razed Bislig City's center of business few weeks ago received relief goods as the Philippine National Red Cross Surigao del Sur Chapter distributes packs of rice, noodles and canned goods recently, a Red Cross official said.

In a phone interview, Abel de Guzman, PNRC-SDS Administrator said that they gave some 1,050 families three kilos of rice, three packs of noodles and two cans of sardines per household as immediate support.

De Guzman added said that he is thankful to Gov. Pimentel, Jr. for providing the stake truck used to ferry the packed relief goods from Tandag to Bislig City.

Nilo Ampon, Board Member of PNRC in Surigao Sur said that the recipients were registered with the City Social Welfare and Development Office-Disaster Action Team after thorough validation and assessment which made the distribution process systematic, fast and efficient.

He added that the RC Relief Operation team headed by de Guzman from Tandag and a dozen from RCs Specialized Volunteer Service in Bislig City headed by Gregorio Epis joined in the distribution of relief goods.

Ampon said that the distribution started at 10:00 AM and ended at 5:00 PM.

"The distribution of relief goods to victims of disasters, both natural and man-made, is just one of the mandates of the Philippine National Red Cross in carrying out humanitarian programs for the most vulnerable and disadvantaged individuals of our society", Ampon said.

He added that the concern of the RC is to provide victims immediate relief from distressful condition and to help alleviate their suffering.

Ampon disclosed that the fire that razed the district of Bonggaitan and market site is considered the biggest fire in the province after more that three decades where the damage to property, buildings and residential houses is estimated to reach P500,000.

He added that the victims were temporarily housed in school buildings at Mangagoy Central while some have stayed with their relatives.

The distribution was done at the ground of Mangagoy Elementary School in Bislig City and was personally handled by Nilo Ampon, Bislig City Mayor Alberto Tan and Abel de Guzman. (PIA-Agusan del Sur) [top]
