Mindanao LGUs share best practices

Davao City (26 October) -- On the 15th anniversary of the enactment of Republic Act 7160 or better known as the Local Government Code. Different representatives of Local Government units cited for innovative local initiatives met and shared their best practices during the Innovative Governance for Peace and Development in Mindanao forum held October 25-26 at the Apo View Hotel in Davao City.
Various Local government units or LGUs shared outstanding practices in Local governance like improved delivery of social services, local economic development and enhanced and functional local structures.
According to MEDCO chairperson Virigilio Leyretana the forum aims to provide a venue for sharing, recognizing and celebrating various innovative initiatives of LGUs and their partners in the private sector and civil society.
In the Davao Region at least three LGUs shared their experiences among which are Santo Tomas Municipality of Davao del Norte for its model Solid Waste Management program, Tagum City its experience in harnessing corporate powers of the LGUs in running economic enterprises. And the host Davao City for its institutionalized gender-sensitive local governance
The forum which is part of the 2006 Local Governance Month nationwide celebration was organized by the Surveys, Training, Research and Development Services Inc. (STRIDES) and the Mindanao Coalition of Development NGO Networks (MinCODE).
The forum was made in partnership with the Department of Interior and Local Government, Mindanao Economic Development Council (MEDCO), League of Cities of the Philippines and the Local Government Academy along with several partners from the academe and the civil society. The Transparent Accountable Governance (TAG), a project of the Asia Foundation and the United States agency for International Development meanwhile provided funding support to the forum.
