P500M GMA fund released for ARMM projects
Koronadal, South Cotabato (26 October) -- The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (DPWH-ARMM) is currently undertaking the implementation of major infrastructure projects worth P500 million, vital to the attainment of development viability as envisioned in its regional economic agenda.
It was learned from DPWH-ARMM Regional Secretary Rasul Abpi that the amount was released by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo upon the request of ARMM Governor Zaldy Ampatuan to fund important infrastructure projects in the autonomous region. This, he said is over and above ARMM's approved annual budget.
According to Engr. Abpi, one major project being undertaken in the autonomous region is the Potable Water System with the funding of P1.66 million.
He clarified that DPWH-ARMM is implementing 283 potable water projects in the entire ARMM but the P1.66 which came from the ARMM 2005 budget is intended for eighteen towns in the provinces of Maguindano, Lano del Sur and Sulu. These projects are implemented through contract and memorandum of agreement (MA) with the local government units.
The P500 million GMA Special Fund is distributed among the five provinces namely Maguindanao, Lanao del Sur, Sulu, Basilan Tawi-tawi and the city of Marawi for other infra projects including school buildings, flood control system, public markets and farm-to-market roads, Abpi added.
