OWWA unveils scholarship program for OFW dependents

San Fernando, Pampanga (26 October) -- Dependents of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) who intend to pursue courses leading to baccalaureate degrees can now avail of scholarship programs for school year 2007-2008 through the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA).
Socorro B. Castro, officer-in-charge of the OWWA in Region III said that scholarship programs are available to qualified dependents of OWWA members, active or inactive, who intend to pursue any four to five (4-5) year baccalaureate course in the priority fields of Science and Technology.
Castro said that the pre-qualifying requirements of an applicant are that he/she be a child of an active OFW, below 21 years of age, a Filipino citizen and with no pending application for citizenship in any country and does not have dual citizenship, in good health and of good moral character, has not earned units in any post, secondary or undergraduate course, must have an average grade of at least 80% and belong to the upper 20 % of the high school graduating class and not be a recipient of any scholarship award .
The scholarship privileges include school fees not exceeding P10,000 per semester, a monthly stipend of P3,500, book allowance of P1,000 per semester, P500 clothing allowance per semester, GSIS group health and accident insurance, actual cost of economy fare from the scholarís residence to place of study from the start and end of each academic year.
Castro disclosed that the awardees shall be selected on the basis of their performance in the National Scholarship Examination administered by the Department of Science and Technology ĖScience Education Institute (DOST-SEI).
Castro also said that interested applicants for the OWWA scholarship program should submit the original and photo copy of the following documentary requirements: accomplished application form (Form I), 1 x 1 I D pictures (2 copies), health certificate attesting to physical fitness of applicant (Form 2), proof of OWWA Membership, official receipt of OWWA contributions, OFW E-card and OFW information sheet, copy of birth certificate duly authenticated by the Local Civil Registrar or National Statistics Office (NSO), Form 137 of transcript of record accompanied by the principalís certification of scholastic standing of the applicant and statement of applicant that he/she has no earned units in any post secondary or undergraduate course.
Deadline for filing of application will be on November 6, 2006 and date of examination will be on December 3, 2006.
