Equal protection of laws seen as key to successful land reform justice

by Romy Sabaldan

Davao City (27 October) -- Equal protection of laws and its promotion in favor of all persons is the key to a successful agrarian reform justice.

Commissioner Wilhelm Soriano of the Commission on Human Rights (CHR) stressed this point in the recently concluded Multi-Sectoral Seminar Workshop on Agrarian Justice participated in by the seven pillars of the criminal justice system.

Soriano called on the government to ensure what he said as remedial mechanism for redress of grievances not only for farmer beneficiaries but all those involved.

Human rights in Soriano’s viewpoint is the promotion of equal protection of laws in favor of all persons.

Held for the first time in Davao City following its inception five years ago, the gathering called for a common interpretation of agrarian reform laws.

Heading the list of participants to the five-day gathering at he Waterfront Insular Hotel include Conrado “Ding” Navarro”, Executive Director of the Agrarian Justice Foundation, Incorporated. Agrarian reform being the focal point of the discussions was represented in the workshop by Undersecretary Narciso B. Nieto, Field Operations Chief of the Department of Agrarian Reform. Contributing to a wide spectrum of agrarian justice and its legal nuances was the chief of the Public Attorneys Office (PAO) lawyer Persida Rueda-Acosta.

Navarro’s foundation is the lead agency in the inter-related works of agrarian justice and hopes to pool built-in government resources among line agencies in spreading out awareness of agrarian laws.

He said the CHR can share manpower resources by helping investigate cases involving farmer beneficiaries of agrarian reform. Many of these cases in Mindanao are in Davao del Sur involving coconut farmers, he said. (PIA) [top]
