GSP Southern Leyte council conducts senior scouters’ encampment

Maasin City (27 October) -- Around 500 girl and adult scouters from different municipalities throughout the province joined the 13th Provincial Junior and Senior Encampment conducted by the Girl Scout of the Philippines (GSP) - So. Leyte Council, October 25-29, 2006 at the Sunken Garden, Provincial Capitol here.

GSP Technical Assistant Evelyn Tomol announced the gathering of scouters during the weekly Kaabag TV program held recently hosted by PIA Infocen Manager Erna Sy Gorne.

Their mission for the scout encampment is to teach them especially the young scouters how to be responsible, progressive, dynamic and patriotic. “Girls should also be taught how to enjoy outdoor activities and give them chance to explore with the outdoor life” she said. Provincial encampment is one step for the scouters to qualify for the regional encampment before participating in the national encampment, Tomol added.

Some of the activities lined up during the event are lectures on swimming, adventure games, cave exploration’ disaster preparedness, first aid, earthquake drill, handicraft orientation, waste segregation, tree planting, hike out at Monte Cueva where they will have a solemn activity through prayers and at Esfa Beach Resort for coastal clean-up among others.

The opening program was graced by Department of Education (DepEd) Schools Division Superintendent Violeta Alocilja as guest speaker, Provincial Administrator Genis Murallos who welcomed the participants in behalf of the province and Hon. Sangguniang Panglungsod Member Effie A. Sabandal for the City of Maasin.

Tomol recounted how to qualify to be a girl scout which is a school-based organization since the girls will be recruited from their schools. Though, they are also accepting women from the barangays to register with their organization. These women are mostly the mothers of the girl scouts. These mothers can also join the encampments where their children participated and at the same time they will be given insurance benefits with the annual registration fee of P35.00 for protection and security.

Meanwhile, GSP is now disseminating raffle tickets sold at P10 each. Proceeds of which is for the girl scouts’ activities specifically for training, encampments and other general operational expenses. The tickets were distributed at different schools throughout the province. They will be given 35% share of the sold tickets which are intended solely for scouting purposes. First prize is P15,000; 2nd prize – P10,000; 3rd prize – P7,500; 4th prize – P5,000; 5th prize – P2,500 and 10 consolation prizes at P500 each.
