Mindanao Super Region Forum set

by Robert E. Roperos

Butuan City (October 27) -- The Office of the Presidential Adviser on the Peace Process (OPAPP) recently spearheaded the Mindanao Super Region Forum (Caraga Leg) recently with OPAPP Secretary Jesus Dureza as guest speaker in one of the local convention centers here.

In his speech, Sec. Dureza emphasized that the Super Region strategy being espoused by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo is a move to accelerate development across peripheral areas of the country and is now moving full swing with the government already consolidating the identified key infrastructure projects.

Sec. Dureza also said that the adoption of super region strategy augurs well for Mindanao, given the island’s competitive edge in agribusiness sector, which could be further harnessed by major infrastructure support.

“Apart from its competitive advantage, investment priorities in Mindanao also take into account the fact that the island has the poorest regions and provinces. “The super region strategy will therefore play a key role in ensuring that despite the pervading issues and challenges, efforts to address Mindanao’s development imperatives are accelerated”, Sec. Dureza said.

The forum is aimed at providing a venue for the Mindanao Super Region to be communicated to the private sector, local officials and other groups in the region in-line with the Super Region’s goal of strengthening government and private sectors partnership.

It has been recalled that President Arroyo first unveiled the concept of “super regions” in the Philippines in her 2006 State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA), noting the importance of grouping selected regions and provinces by their economic strengths to stimulate economic growth and development and make the country competitive with the rest of its Asian neighbors.
