SEA-K Tindahan launched in Santo Tomas

Davao City (28 October) -- Her Excellency Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's main thrust in alleviating poverty in the country has garnered full support in Sto. Tomas. October 23, 2006 marks the beginning of a realization of this program for the women of the Dona Luisa Lorenzo Fadi (DLLF) Womens Cooperative in Barangay La Libertad, this municipality.

SEA-K is a program of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) which grants loans to associations as much as P150,000 with 0% interest. This program aims to alleviate women's financial status and make them self reliant and help them start a small business that may assist their spouse in putting food in the table.

The SEA-K/Tindahan natin was launched with National Food Authority (NFA) rice sold at P18/kilo in their cooperative making quality and affordable rice available for the residents of the barangay especially to those who have meager income.

The LGU's poverty alleviation innovation in line with GMA'S national program is making this possible and does not only provide food in the table but employment as well'' stressed by Ms. Ella Caballero, Social Welfare Assistant in her speech during the program.

Barangay La Libertad is not the first barangay to launched SEA-K/ Tindahan Natin, barangay Balagunan has successfully implemented the program and is now earning 5-6thousand pesos daily in the rice sales alone. and through this income has made it possible for the association to expand services such as financial lending to its members who are all women.

Mayor Maximo M. Estela, MD pronounced that he has no doubt that the success story of Barangay Balagunan will be duplicated in Barangay La Libertad, for he has complete trust in the women's ability to be self-sufficient and gladly congratulate each member of the cooperative during his inspirational message.
