PIA Press Release

Biliran farmers avail of fertilizer assistance

by Flor Jackson

Naval, Biliran (28 October) -- In order to increase the produce of rice farmers in the island province of Biliran who are now planting hybrid variety of rice, the provincial government of Biliran through Biliran Governor Rogelio Espina, the Office of Provincial Agricultural Services (OPAS) is encouraging rice farmers to avail of the Fertilizer Assistance Program, one of the many programs lined-up by Governor Rogelio Espina for the development of rice farming in the province.

This was revealed by Gov. Espina himself during the “Tingog sa Probinsya” radio program when he said that each farmer who avails of the program will receive five sacks of organic fertilizer at P250 per sack and three sacks of urea fertilizer at P870 per sack, repayment of which will be collected and due on the harvest following the release of the fertilizer to the farmer-beneficiaries.

He bared that if each farmer yields 170 cavans of palay per hectare of his rice farm, he will not be required to pay for the sacks of fertilizer he received, instead he will be asked to give only three sacks of palay or one sack of rice where these will be used by the provincial government for its feeding programs in identified barangays all over the province.

On the other hand, Gov. Espina further said that if the farmers fall short of his palay harvest to below 170 sacks per hectare of palay farm, then he is only required to give six sacks of palay and the same will also be given as additional supply for the feeding program of the province.

It was learned that one of the thrusts of the provincial government through the implementation of the OPAS, Biliran being an agricultural province, is to encourage farmers to go into planting of high yielding variety of rice to ensure farmers’ bountiful harvests.

The provincial government through the OPAS is regularly conducting seminars and trainings for agricultural and rice farmers to upgrade their knowledge and skills in modern farming technology that will surely improve agricultural production that will redound to more income for the Biliran farmers.

Meanwhile, the OPAS recently conducted a training to some 100 farmers all over the province on high value crops and vegetable production. While lectures and demonstrations were conducted by the agricultural experts who were invited to impart their knowledge in modern farming, the training participants were emerged in actual demonstration farms at the provincial capitol compound for them to see and observe how modern techniques of farming using high value vegetable seeds and other crops are done from the time of planting unitl the time these are harvested.

It is the dream of Gov. Espina and Mayor Gerardo Espina, Sr. of the municipality of Naval to make Biliran province the vegetable and fruit basket of Eastern Visayas. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
