Capiz showcases unique culture at regional tourism assembly

Roxas City (29 October) -- The province of Capiz capped last Saturday its participation in the 2006 Western Visayas Regional Tourism Assembly in Iloilo City with a cultural presentation that showcased “authentic and true-to-form” Capiceño culture and way of life at the SM City Activity Center in Iloilo City.

The words “authentic and true-to-form” came from organizers of the event led by the Department of Tourism (DOT) as they acknowledged the efforts exerted by local government units in the region to depict their distinct culture as a major component of the local tourism industry.

Speaking during the cultural showcase, Gov. Vicente Bermejo said the activity was meant to give other people in the region who flocked at the tourism assembly, otherwise known as the regional version of the “WOW Philippines,” a glimpse into Capiceño culture, products and genuine hospitality of the Capiceños.

In fact, Bermejo glady noted that visitors who come to the province to learn from its best practices in development program implementation gain more because aside from the insights learned they are also treated to Capiceño hospitality and beautiful and historic places, seafood and souvenir items.

The province has become a model of so-called best practices courtesy of its outstanding records in the implementation of various development programs ranging from local governance, health service delivery, information systems and fiscal management.

The governor led the provincial delegation including Congressman Rodriguez Dadivas of the first congressional district, Vice Gov.Victor Tanco, Sr., members of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan, municipal mayors, and other local officials who went to Iloilo City to manifest the Capiceños’ support to the regional tourism event.

The cultural show was the culminating activity of the celebration of Capiz Day dubbed “O Capiz” as one of the major highlights of the entire tourism assembly which had its beginnings in the Best of the Regions Showcase – WOW Philippines, national tourism event held in Intramuros, Manila in 2003 and 2005.

The other highlights of Capiz’s participation were in the Parade of Festivals and Western Visayas Festival Queen Pageant last Oct. 27, and travel mart and products fair from Oct. 23-29.

Reigning Mutya sang Sinadya sa Halaran Arianne Argañosa clinched the 3rd runner-up honors in the beauty pageant that saw the participation of the region’s festival queens.

The cultural show featured the acts of cultural groups of the towns of Sigma, Tapaz and Pilar with Al Tesoro of Dagway Sigmahanon as overall show director. The Sinaot Festival group of Pres. Roxas town represented the province in the parade of festivals with their depiction of Sinadya sa Halaran, Capiz’s premiere festival.

Describing the accomplishments of his administration during his three consecutive terms, Bermejo said “we concentrated our efforts in developing models in the implementation of our basic delivery and in the promotion of economic and social growth of the province using his Ten-Point Agenda.”

The governor thanked all Capiceños who supported Cpaiz's participation in the event hosted by Iloilo City headed by mayor Jerry Treñas and supported by the Regional Development Council chaired by Antique Gov. Sally Zaldivar Perez. (PIA-JSC) [top]
