LAGAWE, Ifugao (30 October) -- The province through the member agency representatives of the Provincial Nutrition Council (PNC) received their well deserved honors of a certificate of recognition by the National Nutrition Council (NNC) for catering to the nutritional needs of its constituents resulting to the improvement of the nutritional status of its constituents particularly its children during the 2006 National Nutrition Awarding Ceremonies held in Manila.
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo, who handed the plaque of recognition to the winners, said this award reflects the NNC's commitment to promote proper nutrition to ensure the health and wellness of our people.
The President also lauded the NNC for organizing the event that aims to recognize the contributions of individuals, groups, and communities to the successful implementation of nutrition programs and making the delivery of nutrition and related services in the country more efficient and responsive to the needs of the times.
As part of the bold step the province is taking to be able to meet the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) of Eradicating Extreme Poverty and Hunger and Reduce Child Mortality, the PNC intensified implementation of the nutrition program with the introduction of innovative projects.
Contributing to the improvement of nutrition situation were food security measures such as home and community food production which provided food on the table everyday; supplemental feeding to rehabilitate malnourished children; and distribution of small animals like Kabir chicken, ducks and tilapia fingerlings which helped augment family incomes. Micronutrient supplements like vitamin A capsules, iron tablets were also given to pregnant and lactating women, and other women of child bearing age.
Other interventions were "Todok AHIN", an advocacy to encourage the use of iodized salt; the search for the "nutrition friendly canteen" which enjoined school canteens and encouraged the consumption of processed food products with the Sangkap Pinoy seal and other nutritious indigenous foods.
The province likewise introduced innovative and integrated poverty alleviation efforts through the HENSI-PAP which uses and integrates package of social services using the Minimum Basic Needs Framework.
Congressman Solomon Chungalao supported the nutrition program by sustaining the enrollment of indigent families and their malnourished children with PhilHealth.
The efforts exerted by the PNC has won for the province the Green Banner Award at the regional level for three consecutive years and for which the CROWN Maintenance Award was taken.
To maintain the award to qualify for the Hall of Fame and to continue its commitment of serving the nutritional needs of its constituents, the PNC has again come up with doable nutrition interventions and activities like the "Nutri Fun Challan"; Nutrition quiz bee for mothers and fathers; and the fund drive to collect funds to augment the financial requirements needed for some nutrition activities.
NNC OIC Executive Director Ma. Bernardita Flores complimented and thanked the winners for keeping the torch of nutrition continuously well-lighted for others to see what it takes to be a winner.
With the collective expertise, experience and commitment of all awardees, non-awardees, and other nutrition stakeholders, the council is confident that they will be able to put nutrition back to its important niche at the center of the country's development initiatives. (PIA Ifugao) [top]
