Biliran senior citizens convene on Elderly Week

By Lanie Pitao-Tupaz

Naval, Biliran (October 31) -- Registered senior citizens of the entire province of Biliran convened at the Biliran provincial capitol on October 27 in celebration of the elderly week on the fourth week of October.

The Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) of Biliran headed by Ms. Flordeliza Trani prepared a parade, lectures and a popularity contest for the active elderly of the province of Biliran.

To cope with this year's elderly week theme, "Nakatatanda: Kaagapay sa Pagkakaisa at Kapayapaan", provincial PSWDO invited a representative from the Department of Health to orient them on the Botica sa Barangay which is supposed to be managed by the senior citizen's orgnaizations.

Aside from the Botica sa Barangay under DOH, the provincial government of Biliran also provided them orientation on livestock dispersal so that whoever among them is interested with the program may apply at the Provincial Veterans Office.

A lighter moment in the form of popularity contest for the senior was enjoyed on that one-day convention. Chosen Most Popular Lolo and Lola were Mr. Rodolfo Jumetilco and Mrs. Lolita Montecillo, first runner-up were Mr. & Mrs. Virgilio Menchavez, second runner-up were Mr. Sixto Batistis and Mrs. Isabela Rosagaron, third runner-up were Mr. & Mrs. Dioscoro Mecaydor, and fourth runner-up were Mr. & Mrs. Apolonio Trapal.

In support to the Senior Citizens of the country, Republic Act 7432 gives them 20% discount in transportation, and establishments such as hotels, restaurants, and recreation centers.

An expanded law for the elderly under Republic Act 9257 provides an additional 5% discount in the purchase of canned goods such as sardines, tuna, luncheon meat, meat loaf, corned beef, condensed/evaporated/powdered milk, bread, coffee, sugar, edible oil, instant noodles, frozen/refrigerated/preserved/ready to cook meat, and liquid/bar/powdered laundry soap.

The 5% discount for these items can only be availed if purchase are made in supermarkets, groceries, convenience stores and bakeries.

This law does not apply in wet markets, flea markets, cooperative stores and sari-sari stores.

Under this expanded law, purchases of each registered senior citizen must not exceed P650 per week. Unexpended allocation for the week cannot be carried over to the following week. (PIA-Biliran) [top]
