Tacloban City (October 31) -- With the thought of providing the children of underprivileged families easier access to playthings which will contribute to their total development as persons, the local government of Tacloban City on October 30 piloted the Toybrary at Barangay 83-C Taguictic, San Jose.

The Toybrary project at Taguictic was made possible through the collective effort of the City Government of Tacloban through the City Social Welfare Office and the City Population Office, Ms. Catherine Sicoy of Kimro reported.

Ms. Lilioza Baltazar, the head of the City Social Welfare Office said that Toybrary is a special project in line with the celebration of the month of October as the Universal Children's Month. She said that target barangays, those around the City especially those barangay whose underprivileged population lacks access to playthings, have been identified.

Ms. Heidiliza Ramos of the City Population Office revealed that the project was conceived with the realization of the significant role of playthings in enhancing the physical, intellectual, emotional and social development of children.

City Population Officer Cielito Esquibel called on the day care pupils, parents and teachers to take care, manage and maintain the Toybrary well so that the next batch of day care pupils will also benefit from the project.

He also urged the barangay officials to maintain and support the project even beyond the implementation time which is Octobe to December of 2006.

The Toybrary which is housed in the Day Care Center of the barangay, is furnished with different kinds of colorful and exciting toys, from dolls to blocks to toy cars and gadgets and balls including an array of coloring and storybooks, which have been acquired through solicitations and donations.

Brgy. Chairman, Hon. Virgilio Ponce, in behalf of the barangay council, expressed happiness for having the ToyBrary in their community and in being the pilot barangay for the project. He pledged the Council's support in maintaining the project which will contribute a lot to the growth and development of the children. (PIA 8) [top]
