LTO 8 spearheads regional council for road safety

Tacloban City (October 31) -- Land Transportation Office 8 Regional Director Raul Aguilos presided over the organizational meeting, today, of the Regional Council for Road Safety and Environment Friendly Transport System.

In the meeting which was held at the LTO 8 Regional Office, Director Aguilos stressed that the leading cause of fatalities in the country today is road accidents. Although this may not be apparent in Region 8 yet, Director Aguilos and the members of the council believe it is of paramount importance that concerted efforts be initiated to address the occurrences of road accidents because the Region has already its share of road accidents.

The members of the Council agreed that since all the respective agencies are somehow and in some ways involved in promoting road safety and clean air related transport programs, by joining their individual efforts together, the result will be of more impact to the citizenry of the Region.

The Council is composed of the Land Transportation Office, the Department of Public works and Highways, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources through the Environmental Management Bureau, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board, the Philippine National Police, the Traffic Management Group, the Department of Trade and Industry, the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority, the Philippine Information Agency, the Department of Interior and Local Government and the City Government of Tacloban.

The various roles of the ten member agencies of the Council were discussed during the meeting and the members were given up to November 3 to finalize the Memorandum of Agreement.

The formal launching of the Regional Council for Road Safety is tentatively scheduled on November 15, at 9:00 o'clock in the morning. The occasion will also serve as the venue for the signing of the Memorandum of Agreement by the member agencies.
