P1.37B earmarked for Bontoc-Tabuk road

by Larry Lopez

TABUK, KALINGA (4 December) -- The announced P1.37B fund to develop the Bontoc-Tabuk road, under the mega-region project of Pres. Gloria Arroyo is a most welcome gift to the people of the province.

Agriculture Secretary and Development Champion for Northern Luzon Agribusiness Quadrangle Arthur C. Yap made the announcement before local officials and government employees during his recent visit to the province.

The fund is intended to develop the Bontoc-Tabuk portion of the Tuguegarao-Bontoc road development project contained in the last State of the Nation Address of the President.

Department of Public Works and Highways -CAR Regional Director Mariano Alquiza said the project is scheduled to be bid out early next year, as soon as all requirements are accomplished.

Alquiza said Bontoc-Tabuk road is part of the main trunk line of the Cordillera road network, which links the region to major areas of North Luzon.

The mega-region concept connects mid-regions to business trunk lines, to open these areas to business and trade. This is in line with government's thrust of providing access to interior areas for them to bring out their agri-products.

Yap said the project is part of the over-all plan in providing hard infrastructure facilities to boost competitiveness of local producers in the agribusiness.

Feasibility study of the project is now completed. It has a timetable from August 2006-2009.

Yap said Pres. Arroyo asked for a co-sharing implementation scheme between the national and local government to fast track implementation of the project. The Secretary said if there is a need, the project will be divided into phases, explaining this is the fitted scheme for this type of project.

Sources from DPWH-CAR said part of the project funding, in the amount of P25M, is ready to develop portion of the Bontoc-Tabuk road.

P15M is allocated for Pinagan-Dalimuno road concreting project and P10M is for Banat-Gonogon road concreting. Both are still for implementation. (PIA-Kalinga) [top]
