PDEA lauds Davao filmmakers

by RG Alama

Davao City (5 December) -- The second Mindanao Film Festival opened last Sunday (December 3) at the Gaisano Mall Cinema 4 with guest of honor Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) Director-General Undersecretary Dionisio Santiago lauding the efforts of Mindanao filmmakers.

Speaking as guest of honor during the short but festive, ethnic-inspired opening rites Santiago said that while some show business personalities have engaged in the use and selling of illegal drugs, and have become bad role models to the society, some have become model citizens by being drug-free and that include filmmakers who have used the medium in educating the viewers about the evils of drugs.

PDEA have partnered with the festival organizers; the Alchemy of Vision and Light (AVL) Film and TV productions in bringing this year's Mindanao Film Festival.

Apart from the six short films which are being featured in the week-long film festival, also showcased are three documentaries produced by three different schools in Davao City, which tackled the fight against drug menace in Davao City.

Participating in the intercollegiate documentary category are University of Mindanao's "Salot," Holy Cross of Davao's "Dropesa," and Ateneo de Davao's "Ang Kangitngit sa Davao." These documentaries were featured in the culminating activity of the Anti-Drugs week last November. Aside from the PDEA sponsored documentary category. The anti-drugs body also will be giving a special citation to the short films who are tackling drug abuse.

Santiago said that these documentaries and films would help in educating the public particularly the youth about the evils of drugs and praised the filmmakers for foregoing commercial appeal to help tackle a very serious problem.

PDEA XI Director Police Supt. Wilkins Villanueva said that the documentaries are useful tools in the drug prevention campaign of which PDEA XI has been constantly conducting.

Dax Canedo the festival director said that the tie-up with the PDEA is in line with his vision of having Mindanao filmmakers as responsible filmmakers not just to themselves but to the society as well.

Santiago who was visibly impressed with the tie-up said that he would make the PDEA-AVL partnership as a national model. Citing that he wants it to be replicated nationwide.

The films and documentaries of the Mindanao Film Festival, hosted by PDEA XI and organized by the Alchemy of Vision and Light will have it's run from Dec. 3-10 at Gaisano Mall Cinema Four (regular screening hours). The film awards night will be held on Dec. 9, at Tabuan, Matina Town Square. (PIA XI) [top]
