PWDs urged to put up livelihood projects in Davao

Davao City (8 December) -- Councilor Domingo Dalodo, chair of the committee on social services and development on cultural communities encouraged members of the Association of Differently-Abled Persons (ADAP) to put up their own livelihood projects to earn additional income and have a decent means of living.

Differently-abled persons or popularly known as Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) need not lose hope because they can still contribute to the betterment of themselves and the community where they are living.

Gracing the ARENA-XI forum over DXRP Radyo ng Bayan anchored by Josette Olivera and the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), Councilor Dalodo said although some of the PWDs are not qualified to be employed because of their disabilities, they need not lose hope.

The city government has been providing assistance through the programs of the City Social Services and Development Office (CSSDO) and other concerned agencies both from the government and private entities.

Councilor Dalodo cited an instance where the Rotary Club of Matina has been very supportive of the Computer Center for PWDs which has been housed at Lisper Inn along Juna subdivision with Computer Professor Engr. Darlito Palermo managing the computer literacy for both abled and disabled persons.

The DSWD has provided assistance for ADAP members and infact turnover the DSWD livelihood project at Bago Oshiro which is now being maintained by PWDs for training and livelihood center.

ADAP members, in coordination with the Department of Education has been earning a living by making chairs and tables for the education department.

On the other hand, the Kakayahan ng may Kapansanan Foundation Inc. (KKFI) headed by Dra. Ma. Luisa Aportadera is also helping PWDs get employed. At present, some PWDs are employed at City Hall as computer clerks while others work as movie checkers in the different theaters in the city.

The TULAY project of the Department of Labor and Employment has been providing trainings for the development of PWDs.

The City Council, TULAY program of DOLE, KKFI, the Regional and City Council for the Welfare of the Disabled Persons are providing skills trainings for PWDs to enhance their capabilities suited for their interests, potentials and abilities.

PWDs are also encouraged to set up their own self-employment projects either individually or by groups. (PIA XI) [top]
