Abrenios mourn death of Cong. Bersamin

BANGUED, Abra (26 December) -- This landlocked province has again lost a respected and well-loved leader with the assassination of Abra Lone District Representative Luis "Chito" Purugganan Bersamin, Jr.

Bersamin, 62, was killed together with his security officer, SPO1 Adelfo Ortega, in front of the Mt. Carmel Church in New Manila, Quezon City on December 16, 2006 at 5:30 PM right after the wedding of his niece, Pia Bersamin (and Nino Delvin), daughter of his sibling Justice Lucas P. Bersamin.

The remains of the late Congressman was brought home to their ancestral home in Bangued last Thursday. Interment is set on December 27.

In an interview with Vice Governor Jaime A. Lo aired over the local radio stations here, he expressed his grief over the merciless killing of Rep. Bersamin and his security officer. He said he condemns this act of violence and posed his challenge to all the people of Abra, as this violent act and all the other crimes that happened earlier with the other local leaders are putting Abra in a very bad and embarrassing situation.

He informed the public that the Sangguniang Panlalawigan passed a resolution urging national leadership to conduct a fair, fast and unbiased investigation and solution to the case to give justice not only to the late Congressman and his family but to entire populace of Abra as the whole province mourns the loss of a great and well-loved leader.

Bersamin, on his second term as Abra Representative, was Vice-Governor from 1998 to 2001. He also served as Mayor of Bangued for long years after his early retirement as manager of the Allied Bank in Bangued. He is the eldest among the seven (7) children of the late Dr. Luis Bersamin, Sr. and Dr. Rosario Purugganan-Bersamin who were both, like the late Congressman, well-loved by the Abrenos for their dedication to public service and the academe.

Eustaquio "Takit Bersamin, younger brother of the late Congressman, appealed to the public to refrain from giving wreath or flowers, but instead donate cash for the scholarship fund of the foundation which they will put up in to sustain the scholars of the late Congressman. Takit likewise assured the present scholars of the late Congressman that they have nothing to worry because their checks have been prepared before this tragedy.

Meanwhile, the Philippine Information Agency - Abra Infocen has set up its desk office at the Abra Provincial Capitol Annex Building (in-front of LTO-Abra District Office) as the press center in Bangued to provide assistance to the national and regional mediamen who come to Abra for the overage of the wake of the lawmaker.
