LAGAWE, Ifugao (26 December) -- The Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) here are considered partners in development.
Marie Halaman from the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO) said that there are at least 40 PWDs from the 11 municipalities here who are actively participating in government programs geared towards development.
"Our office organized the said sector and trained them how to contribute to the development of their communities despite their situations," Halaman said.
She noted that the PWDs, who celebrated recently the International Day of Disabled Persons, have started to come out from their shell when the government showed their concern to them. With the special attention given by the government to this sector of our society, they were able to prove to themselves that they can help in uplifting the economic conditions of their families and the community where they belong in their own simple ways, Halaman said.
On the other hand, Provincial Administrator Robert Tayaban said that the PWDs give inspiration to the public because they are given talents or skills by God that not everybody has. He cited a PWD from here who has no hands but can use his feet to draw.
According to Halaman, some of the PWDs use their skills as their source of income. They are gifted with talents and skills in doing manual works so some were able to provide for their own living with the discovery of their skills.
The PSWDO has been conducting skills trainings to enhance their abilities for better performance. She also disclosed that aside from livelihood projects, their office is extending assistance to young and poor but deserving PWDs who can still go to school. "Our office is continuously monitoring the activities of our PWDs, Halaman said. (PIA-Ifugao) [top]
