Tagalog News: DAR-STARCM turns over solar dryer in Midsayap
Koronadal, South Cotabato (10 May) -- A solar drying floor funded by the Support to Agrarian Reform Communities in Central Mindanao (STARCM) was turned over recently in Tumbras, a barangay Agrarian Reform Community (ARC) in Midsayap, North Cotabato.
The solar dryer, measuring 450 sq. m., will supplement the barangay’s capacity to dry its produce from over 700 hectares of farmlands planted to rice, corn and coconut. The facility will be managed by the Barangay Development Council (BDC) through its Infrastructure Committee, and will be maintained through minimal fees that will be charged against farmers that make use of the drying floor.
This is the fifth completed project to be financed under STARCM, a special project funded by the European Union and implemented by the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR).
STARCM interventions in Tumbras ARC that had been completed earlier include the construction of a multi-purpose building, the distribution of farm machinery, and carabao and farm implements; and an inland fishing project that provided small fisherfolk with banca and fishing implements to help raise their catch from the Liguasan Marsh. Three other STARCM projects – duck raising, goat production and banana production -- are ongoing and are expected to be completed soon.
Started in 2001, STARCM funds support infrastructure, agricultural productivity and livelihood requirements of 50 agrarian reform communities in North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat, Lanao del Norte, and Lanao del Sur. (PIA 12) [top]
