Policy makers, planners urged: Make use of data to push growth

by ES Subong

Iloilo City (17 October) -- "Gut-feel" is often a cause of failure in projects.

Philippine Statistical Association-Iloilo Vice chairperson Dr. Sonia Formacion, said policies, programs and projects that are based on "gut-feel" alone are bound to fail.

Formacion, who was among the panel in a cable TV program hosted by the Philippine Information Agency (PIA), said it is the call of the trends in development planning where statistics properly obtained and put together, are to be utilized by government policy makers and development planners.

She also said that although there are data gathering agencies, all agencies and institutions should give attention to generating and using relevant and significant data in formulating program and project policies.

"Statistics properly generated tend to picture out the real situations on which interventions are based, but when they are ignored, local governments and national government institutions are not able to determine what is good for the country," Formacion said.

She also said that this year's Statistical Month celebration's theme: "Statistics and Action: A Road to Better Life Through the MDGs" is a challenge to government to use statistics to give impetus to action so it will achieve its development goals.

She further said that not only government should be concerned with the utilization of statistics but also schools because through theses and dissertations they hone students and professionals who are expected to contribute to push the country's growth a bit further, with their studies.

Formacion said the Philippine Statistical Association is concerned with empowering local governance and decision as well as policy makers, through a better understanding and utilization of statistics.

She also said the association might as well recommend to CHED to encourage undergrad and graduate students to take up researches on topics which are useful to government agencies and even the Committees in the Senate and the House of Representatives. (PIA 6) [top]
