Davao City (27 October) -- The Presidential pardon granted to former President Joseph Estrada will help heal wounds and could benefit the country the economy in particular, this according to Senator Loren Legarda.
Sen. Legarda, who graced the Regional Development Council Meeting and a Cultural Tourism Forum in Tagum City, said that the pardon will stabilize the economy.
"Any form of healing will stabilize the economy." Legarda said. Last October 25, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo granted pardon to former President Estrada who was convicted of plunder with the penalty of reclusion perpetua.
She said the pardon will be President Estrada's win-win situation. "The pardon is not for the opposition, it is for President Estrada's benefit, he's 70 years old already." Legarda said.
The pardon was based on administration policy of releasing inmates who have reached 70 years old. It was also based on the former President's detention which already spanned six and a half years and that the he has publicly committed not to run for public office.
The Presidential pardon is part of the President's Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo's continuing efforts in healing the wounds caused by EDSA 1 and EDSA 2. And which formed part of her then BEAT THE ODDS platform.
Senator Legarda said that although the President Estrada was granted pardon, this does not mean it will lead to a blanket type of reconciliation. But she assured that they are a responsible opposition and are not the ones who will destabilize or conduct extra constitutional acts to pursue political ends. (PIA XI) [top]
