LAGAWE, Ifugao (31 October) -- Cooperatives here converged to join in the annual celebration of "National Cooperative Month" which culminated on October 30 with the theme " Cooperatives for Community Progress".
Evangeline Jasmin, Lagawe Multi-Purpose Development Cooperative (LMDC) Manager, said cooperatives through its various programs and support services have become active partners of government in the achievement of community progress.
This is made evident by testimonies of successful coop members l engaged in small and medium enterprises. These are evidences of "how cooperatives worked in improving life and providing jobs," she stated.
The primary objective of every cooperative, she said, is to provide goods and services to its members thus, enable them to attain increased income and savings, investment, productivity, purchasing power and promote among them equitable distribution of net surplus through maximum utilization economies of sale, cost sharing and risk- sharing, without, however, conducting the affairs of the cooperative for eleemosynary or charitable purposes.
Moreover, its objective include provision of maximum economic benefits to its members, teach them efficient ways of doing things in a cooperative manner, and propagate cooperative practices and new ideas in business and management and allow the lower income groups to increase ownership in wealth of this nation, she added.
For a more strengthened and established partnership, this year's celebration focused among others on Cooperative Development Association (CDA) updates as well as issues and coop concerns.
Jasmin added that while cooperative values are based on self help, self-responsibility, democracy, equality, equity and solidarity, coops encourage members to learn the ethical values of honesty, openness, social responsibility and caring for others. (PIA Ifugao) [top]
