Army, DTI sustain livelihood tie-up in sensitive cluster barangays of Leyte

Tacloban City (February 2) -- The Philippine Army and the Department of Trade and Industry, once again, tied up on January 19, to launch a livelihood training for the second batch of Leytenos in the cluster barangays of the municipality of Leyte..

Information Officer 2nd Lt. Gabriel C. Aranez said that in the early part of the Fourth Quarter of 2008, Lt. Col. Henry M. Bumiltac, commanding officer of the 19th Infantry Battalion; Col Raoul J. Reyes, commander of the 802nd Brigade; DTI-Leyte Director Ed Belas and DTI Region 8 Director now Presidential Assistant for Eastern Visayas Cynthia Nierras, in close coordination with 33.3 Exports managed by Ms. Jennifer Cruz, conceptualized a project aimed at uplifting the living condition of the target beneficiaries in Leyte.

The project launching was done in the cluster barangays of the municipalities of Calubian and San Isidro, on October 22, 2008 where more than 200 low income residents are now beneficiaries.

For this second batch, the three-week livelihood training under the Sub-contracting Partners for Innovation Network of DTI, is focused mainly on Basket Weaving.

The livelihood training, 2nd Lt. Aranez said, has three phases. The first is the lecture on selection of materials; the second is the lecture-demo where the trainees are required to present an output; and the third is the return demo with critiquing and quality inspection.

This training program encourages entrepreneurship, creates jobs and spurs people to produce income generating products using indigenous materials like rattan, nito and buli.

About one hundred and fifty residents from hinterland barangays Bagabao, Mataloto and Tapul for the first cluster; and Consuegra, Tag-abaca and Wague for the second cluster, all of Leyte, Leyte, are the beneficiaries of the program.

The 19th Infantry Battalion of the 8th Infantry Division of the Philippine Army has been very actively implementing measures that would improve the quality of life of the people in the hinterlands, as the effective means of winning the confidence of the people to the government; the best way to preventing the people from being convinced to join the left-leaning groups; and an effective way to defeat the communists.
