PNP studies strikes on vital installations
Tuguegarao City (2 February) -- In line the administration's thrust on anti-terrorism measures, the Philippine National Police (PNP) Region 2 is presently studying the reasons and effects of the series of strikes on vital installations and telecommunications cellsites in the country.
In the previous years, there were series of reported cases on strikes in different vital installations and telecommunications cellsites which were suspected as terrorist attacks by the New Peoples Army (NPA).
P/SSupt. Pedro B. Cuntapay, said a study is being conducted by some police officers of region 2 to collate significant reasons on the strikes and propose counter actions to protect the vital installations.
Intelligence reports state that the reasons why terrorist attack vital installations and cellcites is due to the failure of the companies to pay the revolutionary taxes demanded. However, they have yet to confirm the reports, Cuntapay said.
In the region Cuntapay stated that the PNP is providing security to vital installations like the Magat Dam in Isabela, the Cagayan Economic Zone Authority in Sta. Ana, Cagayan and the different telecommunications cellsite in the different parts of the region.
Cuntapay also said the study is one measure undertaken by the PNP to help the government in its fight against terrorism in the country.
Meanwhile, Cuntapay revealed that based on their monitoring report, the number of NPAs in the region has decreased because of the massive campaign of the AFP and PNP against terrorism and against the recruitment activities of the leftist groups. (PIA Cagayan) [top]
