PGMA understanding sought for thousands of homeowners

Davao City (4 February) -- Thousands of homeowners in Davao City and its neighboring cities and provinces have asked for the understanding and sympathy of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo in the light of the housing crisis brought about by the foreclosure activities of the NHMFC-Balikatan Housing Finance Incorporated and Bahay Financial Services.

Asserting their constitutional rights for decent and affordable housing, the homeowners made the appeal through City Councilor Danilo Dayanghirang, who has maintained direct contact with Cabinet Secretary Silvestre Bello III.

Streamers calling for the intervention of President Arroyo bedecked the gymnasium of the Kapitan Tomas Monteverde Elementary School, this city in the latest general assembly that had the attendance doubling at 2,000 association presidents, representatives and community leaders compared to the previous 1,000 tallied by the Davao City Federation of Homeowners Associations (DCFHA), umbrella organization of at least 300 homeowners associations in Davao City and the neighboring cities and provinces.

The homeowners made the latest appeal calling on the President to intervene and help affected homeowners by extending a more humane consideration on their plight.

Federation officials said we have already made our personal appeal to the president during her latest visit in Davao City and Davao-born cabinet officials like Cabinet Secretary Bello and presidential legal adviser Jesus Dureza are helping us solve the problem.

Federation officials have belied the fact that their accounts are better off under Balikatan Housing which took control of the housing accounts from the National Home Mortgage Corporation during the incumbency as president of the agency the now controversial Celso delos Angeles of the famed Legacy Group banking fiasco.

NHMFC, in its recent reply to an inquiry by the Ombudsman revealed that the accounts were sold at a package price of P90,000 per account to Balikatan Housing. Balikatan in turn are asking homeowners to pay in spot cash at an aggregate asking price of from P300,000 to P500-T.

Every situation that presents itself as a problem has its own corresponding solution, Secretary Bello told federation officials during its first general assembly (pr-RS/PIA XI) [top]
