Gov't plans, programs in place to mitigate effects of global financial crisis

by T. Villavert

Iloilo City (4 February) -- The government's plans and programs are in place to mitigate the effects of the global financial crisis on the Filipinos, said Press Secretary Cerge Remonde.

For the displace overseas Filipino workers, Secretary Remonde said that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo had directed the Department of Labor and Employment and Overseas Filipino Workers and Welfare Administration to step up government efforts to provide assistance to displaced OFWs.

These plans and programs, Remonde said, include providing OFWs with loans which they can use to put up "small businesses" and to undergo "re-training" to equip themselves with other skills they can use in other "viable" jobs in other countries, the Malacanang press report disclosed.

President Arroyo in her meeting with the Filipino community in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia said "ang DOLE-OWWA ay nagtatayo ng mga help desks sa bawat probinsiya. We match the jobseeker with the job.

President during her speech also instructed Secretary Marianito Roque of the DOLE to spearhead the "simple and not complicated" implementation of the program for the displaced Filipino workers abroad, the Malacanang press report disclosed. (PIA 6) [top]
