Suspected communist rebel killed in gov't raid

ICC General Santos City (4 February) -- A raid on New People's Army (NPA) training camp by army troops on Monday resulted in armed skirmishes that killed a suspected communist rebel.

The army, a military report said has launched intensive military operations in the area after reports reached them that NPA-Front 72 had been conducting training for their recruits for about a week now.

It said that when army troops reached the site they were met with a heavy resisting gunfire from some 30 communist rebels.

They also discovered that, indeed, the NPA was having training for their recruits, Milfredo Meligrito, commander of the 57th Infantry Battalion in an interview by media, said. He said government troops overran the NPA training camp after an encounter at barangay Bacung in Tulunan town, North Cotabato.

An M14 armalite rifle, a hand grenade, and various subversive documents were among those recovered from the seized training camp.

When asked how well prepared was the military, Meligrito assured that they are always prepared to huddle even the worst "so we were able to drive the rebels away."

He also said that NPA rebels are backed into engaging in extortion activity such as collection of revolutionary taxes in the area.

Killed in the firefight was rebel Jerry Camin alias Ka Adonis, he disclosed. (PIA SarGen) [top]
