Feature: Vigan housewife sets new record in drinking "basi wine" in Ilocos Sur

Vigan City (February 5) -- A housewife from Vigan City was cited as the "Basi Queen" in Ilocos after she drunk a liter of "Basi wine" (a sugar cane wine) within 30 seconds in a drinking contest held infront of the provincial capitol in celebrating the 2nd day of the Kannawidan Ylocos Festival here.
Jean Alones, 39, a resident of Shelterville, Barangay San Julian Norte, Vigan City, was easy for him to beat her male rival in the final showdown of the contest as she claimed that her constant wine drinking led him to the fame. She said that she started to drink wine at age of 16.
The competitions, which were not only basi drinking contest but also the empanada and longganisa eating contests, were became the main attraction of the day after it were crowded by thousands tourists and visitors.
Ilocos Sur Governor Deogracias Victor "DV" B. Savellano told, "this was a new record of the "Basi Wine" Drinking Contest in the province, in which this was very significant reference in the succeeding competition in the future while promoting our local basi wine produced in the province."
Other records set in the province were the following: Valentin Quimlao of Barangay 3, Vigan City won the empanada eating contest after consuming 17 pieces in 4 minutes in a final showdown with Rosalina Peralta of Shelterville, Barangay San Julian Norte, Vigan City; and for the longganiza eating contest: Jhonny Romano, 16, a resident of Shelterville, Barangay San Julian Norte, Vigan City, ate 20 pieces of cooked longganisa (local meat sausage) within 2 minutes to win the title of fastest eater of longganiza in Ilocs Sur. Romano beats Marijoy Rapon, 30, of Pantay Fatima, Vigan City and the winner of the women's category, during the final showdown.
