DENR-EMB conducts orientation on ozone depletion

by RH Sumagpao, M Calungsod-Locsin

General Santos City (6 February) -- In line with the worldwide target to phase- out ozone depleting substances (ODS) to save the ozone layer, the Environmental Management Bureau (EMB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) recently conducted an orientation for the Regional Information Center Network (RICN).

No less than EMB Director Ella S. Deocadiz, Program Manager of the Philippine Ozone Desk and Institutional Strengthening Project who came all the way from Metro Manila to grace the occasion, presented to the participants the current regulations, laws and programs related to the phase-out of ODS in the country and the national IEC strategy for ODS phase-out.

Some 80 participants coming from local government units (LGUs), government agencies, academe, non government organizations and private media practitioners manifested their support to be a medium of information to extend awareness to the public about ozone depletion and its ill effects to the environment.

EMB Regional Director Datu Tungko M. Saikol in his opening message appealed that the protection of our Mother Earth is not the sole responsibility of DENR but a shared responsibility for everybody.

"Ozone depletion is really a problem of our Mother Earth. We are only given ten years by the Montreal Protocol (on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer) to comply with the target," Director Saikol said.

The Philippine government, together with some other countries. signed the said treaty as a party committed to phase-out ozone depleting substances (ODS).

On the other hand, Bai Soraya L. Meditar, Environmental Education and Information Section Chief, presented the accomplishments of the region in the implementation of Local Awareness Plan (LAP) on Ozone Depleting Substances.

As part of the activity, the participants who were grouped by sector prepared and submitted their respective Local Awareness Plans. They also signed forms for membership to the RICN. (DENR XII/PIA SarGen) [top]
