Barangay captain persuades NPAs to surrender

Tuguegarao City (9 February) -- An awarded barangay captain bravely called the members of the New Peoples Army to surrender and yield to the government's programs and projects for peace and development's sake.

Capt. Anastacio delos Santos of Brgy. Dalla, Baggao, Cagayan, said the best move of the rebels is to surrender to avail of the programs and projects of the government for peace and development of the community and for the good of the future generation.

Delos Santos was awarded the Medalya ng Katangi-tanging Asal by President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for single-handedly defending his family and community against 10 NPA guerillas who attacked his residence last December 15, 2008.

In his testimony, he stated that he was trained as shooter even in his childhood. When the guerillas attacked his residence, he fought using only one short firearm and managed to defend himself and his family and drove the guerillas away from the area.

"I don't know the exact reason why they attacked me. But maybe because of my fellowship with the armed forces," delos Santos said.

He opened himself for any negotiation to further resolve any mistake he had done against the group.

The Brgy. Captain further said that government officials are ready to accept and assist returnees for them to start a new life under the government.

He also presented himself to accompany anybody who wants to surrender to the military officials within their area of responsibility and assured them of their safety and assistance from the government.

During and after the awarding, Delos Santos said he received series of text messages from unknown individuals threatening his life and his family but he is confident that God will protect him against untoward incidents and encounter with the reds.

"I thank the policemen and the military in our area of responsibility for continually safeguarding my barangay and for assuring my security against any attack," he added. (PIA Cagayan) [top]
