BFAR official pushes for inland aquaculture

By Ninfa B Quirante

Catbalogan City (February 9) -- Tahong (mussel) and mariculture godfather Gil Adora now the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) Assistant Director for Technical Services encouraged Samarnons to try a hand on tilapia culture.

During the inauguration of the Samar Integrated Freshwater Hatchery in Brgy. Blanca, Aurora, San Jorge, Samar on February 6, 2009, Adora impressed upon his fellow Samarnons to propagate tilapia.

He added that the government will be supplying tilapia fingerlings and that the upland rivers are suitable for the freshwater fish culture.

Adora is respected by Samarnons for he is touted as the tahong and mariculture godfather.

Adora has devoted half of his lifetime in fisheries, said his fellow workers in the local BFAR.

Meanwhile, Dr. Melchor Tayamen of BFAR's National Freshwater Fisheries Technology Center in the Science City of Munoz also encouraged the fish farmers not only 'eatable tilapia' but those that can be grown in aquariums or the so called ornamental fish.

This, he said will push for agribusiness and may usher economic activity in the area of San Jorge, Matuginao and San Jose de Buan, the three municipalities in Samar with least or without coastal areas. Provincial agriculturist data showed that some 109 fisherfolks will benefit from the project.

San Jorge Mayor, Nancy Grey also thanked the officials of BFAR and the Office of the Provincial Agriculture for choosing the site as it will not only stir the fisher-folks into economic activity but will also promote her native San Jorge as a tourist destination.

San Jorge is home to the Blanca Aurora Falls, located some 39 kilometers northeast of Samar's capital city. (PIA-Samar) [top]
