8 NPA rebels killed, 9 injured in latest armed clash in North Cotabato
General Santos City (9 February) -- At least eight members of the New People's Army (NPA) were confirmed dead while nine others wounded in a latest armed clash in Sitio Dulay, Barangay Bakong, Tulunan, North Cotabato, a military report said.
Lt. Col. Jonathan Ponce, spokesman for Philippine Army's 6th Infantry Division said one of those killed was Jurex Montalban alias Budoy.
He said the body was recovered by the troops of Lt. Col. Wilfredo Miligrito of the 57th Infantry Battalion, Philippine Army last February 2, 2009.
Ponce said that the army troop also overran an abandoned NPA camp in the nearby area, where the encounter took place.
Ponce added that military personnel under the 5thIB manning the area are currently securing the safety of 350 families affected in the armed skirmishes.
Meanwhile the entire Central Mindanao police forces are also on highest alert status versus NPA rebels and lawless Moro Islamic Liberation Front groups (LMGs).
It said it is prepared to deter any possible attacks of terrorism that may be staged in the region by either group. (PIA SarGen) [top]
