Maasin residents avail of free tooth extraction services

By Bong Pedalino

Brgy. San Jose, Maasin City (February 9) -- Young and old alike from this barangay and the outlying areas came here with one single purpose Friday last week: to have their problematic tooth pulled out for good.

At the end of the day, a total of 186 persons from all walks of life had availed of the free dental services held here, with thirteen (13) dentists doing the tooth extracting service assisted by local health unit staffs, said Aida Morsen from the Congressman's District Office.

The free dental clinic was sponsored by Cong. Roger Mercado and the Limasawa Development Foundation (LIDEF) in close partnership with the Philippine Dental Association (PDA) and the Southern Leyte Dental Society.

And it was held to observe the 5th National Dental Health Month celebration with the theme "wastong pagkain, pangangalaga sa nigpin, sa ngiting Pinoy, kaisang kita natin."

Among the guests of the dental mission were Dr. Ma. Vilma Estorba, the Regional Oral Health Program Coordinator, Dr. July Duarte, the provincial supervising Dentist, Cong. Mercado, and City Mayor Maloney Samaco.

During the short opening program, Dr. Choline Caube, President of the Southern Leyte Dental Society, called on the people to really take good care of their teeth, saying that pain spawned by a lingering tooth problem can cause heart failure.

Aside from the regular brushing of teeth every meal, gargling every after in-between meals or snacks is also a must, along with a regular visit to the Dentist at least two times a year, and eating nutritious foods, Dr. Caube added.

Cong. Mercado also encouraged everyone, especially the younger ones, to have clean, white, healthy teeth, saying proper oral hygiene can greatly boost confidence in one's personality and career in the future.

Mayor Samaco said the city government has always been supportive on activities that promote physical well-being, adding that next week the city will undertake an activity on proper care of the eyes.

San Jose Punong Barangay Ismael Sabalo expressed gratitude his barangay was chosen as the center's of the day's action from out of the 70 barangays that comprise the city of Maasin. (PIA-Southern Leyte) [top]
