Commentary: DOH P100 treatment pack, fulfillment of PGMA's SONA commitment

Tacloban City (February 10) -- The Department of Health's P100 treatment pack is a fulfillment of President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo's SONA commitment to lower the prices of drugs and medicines frequently bought by the poor by 50%.

So-called because it will only be made available in 100 government hospitals in the Philippines, the P100 Treatment Pack was designed to implement critical health interventions as a single package, backed by effective management infrastructure and financing arrangements.

The P100 Treatment Pack will ensure that by just paying P100, a poor patient will be able to complete his treatment. This is ensuring drug compliance and preventing drug resistance which is usually the result of not completing the whole treatment prescription.

Director Edgardo Gonzaga of the Department of Health Region 8, informed that in order to fast track the implementation of the SONA pledge of the President, the DOH undertook a project that would ensure access to drugs which are packaged within an affordability parameter of P100. Or lower. This project, he just, has been aptly called as P100.

The P100 Treatment Pack was launched at the Eastern Visayas Regional Medical Center on February 9. Now available at the EVRMC Pharmacy are 11 kinds of P100 Treatment Packs for hypertension, diabetes, hyperacidity, high cholesterol level and antibiotics.

There are about 24 kinds of P100 Treatment Packs but only 11 are available at EVRMC. The kind of medicines was determined by the statistic on the 10 leading causes of mortality in the country.

Dr. Gonzaga said the patient will save a lot by buying the P100 Treatment Pack. Indeed, because where can one buy a one and a half month supply of maintenance medicine for only P100?

The EVRMC Pharmacy will dispense cheap and complete medicine package at P100 per pack, provided that there is a valid prescription from a doctor. For antibiotics, only one treatment pack will be prescribed and dispensed for a complete regimen.

For chronic and maintenance treatment, a maximum of one to one-and-a-half month supply shall be prescribed and dispensed to clients. The prescribing physician must state in the prescription the required dosage per day.

Patients who consulted doctors outside of EVRMC may also buy their medicines at the EVRMC Pharmacy provided they have a valid prescription.

Since the P100 Treatment Pack is already a discounted medicine, the Senior Citizens can no longer avail of the usual discount when buying medicine. (PIA 8) [top]
