February as Heart Month focuses on need for women to take good care of their heart
Tacloban City (February 11) -- This year's celebration of the Heart Month centers on the theme "Mabuhay Ka Pusong Pinay" which brings to fore the vital issue of women's cardiovascular awareness.
The theme of the 36th Heart Month celebration addresses the looming health problems that women are up against these days. Women, lacking awareness and understanding about their health, are more predisposed to heart diseases more than men.
Most women don't know the condition of their health because they prioritize the health of their families over their own. So this year's theme is appropriately chosen to address the health problems of women.
The bad news is that a survey conducted by the Philippine Heart Association in 2003 revealed that 90 percent of Filipinos have at least one risk factor that can lead to a heart disease. The risk factors include obesity, high blood cholesterol, high blood pressure, smoking, diabetes and physical inactivity.
But there's good news. It's well known that diet and other lifestyle factors are important elements in prevention of heart disease.
It's also well known that diet and lifestyle are two risk factors that are modifiable. In other words, it is something you can do something about.
Women can start doing something about the food they eat. Choosing their fats wisely and eating low fat is a good strategy but it is also important to include healthy fats in the heart healthy diet. Omega 3 fats are found in fatty fish such as salmon, mackerel, herring and sardines as well as canola oil.
Add fiber rich food and lots of vegetables to the diet. Fruit and vegetables are the stars in the heart healthy world.
In addition to a healthy diet, one should work towards a heart healthy lifestyle. Exercise regularly, don't smoke and take time to relax and enjoy. Also, one should visit the physician for regular check-ups to keep an eye on one's blood pressure and blood cholesterol.
The Department of Health Region 8 has scheduled the launching of the Healthy Lifestyle to the Max on February 16. The activity will start with a motorcade at 7:30 in the morning and will converge at the People's Center for Hataw exercise and symposium.
Check this out. This maybe the start of one taking good care of her heart. (PIA 8) [top]
