Cagayan de Oro City (12 February) -- President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo has enjoined all local government units (LGU) to fully implement the law on solid waste management (SWM).
Per Executive Order No. 774 reorganizing the Presidential Task Force on Climate Change (PTFCC) which she signed on December 26, last year, the President or the Presidential Assistant on Climate Change (PACC) will visit the regions, provinces, towns and cities every week to see the SWM implementation.
The President will do so until it is proclaimed that the Filipino people have fully integrated into the mainstream of their thoughts their personal environmental responsibilities and thereby effectively implement the Solid Waste Act.
On the other hand, EO774 calls on the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) to lead a Task Group in the implementation of SMW and targets the reduction of solid waste generation by fifty percent (50%) within six (6) months.
It shall also report to the President in person or through the PACC every Friday during the weekly visits to offices and regions to campaign for responsible SWM.
Meanwhile, EO774 calls on the Department of Health (DOH) to enjoin the private sector, such as the sludge excavation contractors and water concessionaires, to undertake a methane recovery program from human and animal waste and convert it into cooking gas and other forms of energy.
After six (6) months of such campaign on SMW, the next stage and level of the focused environmental conservation, protection and restoration (CPR) campaign will be to identify and regenerate the forest lands and protected areas of the islands and seas of the Philippines. (PIA 10) [top]
