LGUs told to highlight child abuse, exploitation
Iloilo City (12 February) -- Interior and Local Government Secretary Ronaldo Puno through Memorandum Circular No.2009-11 issued last February 3, 2009 urged all local chief executives to spearhead and support the observance of the second week of February as the "National Awareness Week for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation."
Puno identified some of the activities to be undertaken during the week-long celebration such as hanging of streamer, announcement of the celebration during flag raising ceremonies and lecture series/orientation skills training relative to the protection of children against sexual abuse and exploitation.
Other activities include lay forum, art/painting contest/quiz bee contest depicting this year's theme, media blitz and other child-related activities.
In his memorandum, Puno said the annual observance seeks to help make the communities safe haven for children with the theme "Sekswal na Pangaabuso sa Bata: Nangyayari Saan Man, Anyo ng Karahasang Dapat Wakasan!"
It will be recalled that the second week of February of each year was declared as the "National Awareness for the Prevention of Child Sexual Abuse and Exploitation" in the country by then President Fidel V. Ramos through Proclamation No. 731 which he signed in 1996. (PIA) [top]
