Search opened for Outstanding Sugarcane Farmers in Visayas
Iloilo City (13 February) -- The Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA) is now accepting nominations for outstanding sugarcane farmers for the Visayas, including those from Region 6, 7, and 8.
The search is a tribute to small sugarcane farmers who have contributed to the promotion of the growth and development of the of the sugar industry.
It will also document the management and best pratices in sugarcane growing that led to the improvement of farm productivity and income of the farmer.
There are more than 27, 955 farmers planting sugarcane in 242,306 hectares in the Visayas during crop year 2007 to 2008.
More than 92 percent are small farmers cultivating farm size of 25 hectares and below who believe that sugarcane growing is a viable and a profitable enterprise and a stable source of livelihood.
The nominee should be a Filipino citizen and actually engaged continuously in the production of sugarcane for at least 24 months immediately preceding the search; should have an area of not more than 25 hectares; with good moral character; and should be nominated by the mill district officer or by any respected individual or organization in the mill district.
