Sasa Port expansion benefits port workers

by JD Abangan

Davao City (14 February) -- To ordinary stevedores, the newly completed Sasa Port expansion brings additional income they can make use to provide the needs of their families.

"Maka manok-manok na pod," Reynaldo Apolinario, 29 years of age of Parola, Sasa, Davao City said, meaning he can provide a more decent food for his family of four children.

Stevedoring since his early 20's, Apolinario has never been so happy in his work nowadays because he can now go on duty for eight to nine shifts in a week, giving him almost a hundred percent fold of what he used to earn.

He used to work up to five shifts only. Working at a minimum rate of P250 with additional overtime pay, ordinary stevedores like Apolinario is earning P375 per shift. In a week, Apolinario enjoys an income of more than P3,000.

"Maisuroy-suroy na pod nako ang akong pamilya," (I can take out my family to strolls) he said.

Davao Integrated Ports and Stevedoring Services Corporation (DIPSCor) and Filipinas Ports Services, Inc. are the stevedoring companies operating at Sasa Port.

DIPSCor Container Yard Operation superintendent Roberto B. Calvo in an interview said more shipping vessels can now dock at Sasa Port and this would mean more workers are needed.

"Maraming barko, maraming trabaho." (more ships, more jobs) Calvo declared.

DIPSCor is employing about 200 stevedores but it is eyeing to hire more workers in anticipation of the increase in number of cargo vessels calling on port at Sasa Port.

President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo yesterday (Friday) formally inaugurated the Sasa Port Expansion Project which costs P396, 089,218. (PIA XI) [top]
