PIA Press Release

PDEA assumes supporting function to DepEd in random drug testing program

Tacloban City (February 15) -- Relative to the provisions of the Department of Education Order No. 7, series of 2009 providing for the conduct of random drug testing in government and private secondary schools in Region 8, the position of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency is to endorse and fully support the said activity.

PDEA Director Gil T. Pabilona, in an official statement relayed by Information Officer Liza M. Fabi-Baoy, said that PDEA shall assume a supporting function to the Department of Education and other agencies.

PDEA may be called upon to extend assistance for the successful implementation of the drug testing in its area of responsibility, Dir. Pabilona said.

PDEA 8, Director Pabilona added, abides by the consensus that the random testing shall be a health, not enforcement issue.

Those found to be positive for the use of illegal drugs shall be subjected to guidance and counseling or rehabilitation, and not persecution and imprisonment, Director Pabilona opined.

Meanwhile, PDEA 8 shall continue to pursue its advocacy programs in the secondary and tertiary institutions, Director Pabilona informed.

The agency will continue to conduct lectures, seminars and symposiums, film showing and photo exhibits on the evils of drug abuse where its services may be sought and at its instance, he said.

Director Pabilona called on secondary schools and tertiary institutions to include NSTP students to contact the PDEA Regional Office should they wish to sponsor drug symposiums, lectures and seminars in their respective areas.
