Maasin City, Southern Leyte (16 February) -- To reduce the incidence of malnutrition, Maasin City Council initiated "Magulay ang Bahay" competition to identified barangays and elementary schools throughout the city, City Agriculturist Amado Acasio reported in a short talk this morning at his office here.

The Office of the City Agriculturist, the implementing agency of the project aims to reduce the rate of malnutrition among the top 20 barangays and top 20 elementary schools with malnourished children based on the "operation timbang" conducted by the Rural Health Units in Maasin City.

"Magulay ang Bahay", now on its second year of implementation, encouraged the participating barangays and schools to increase food production, to provide safe and nutritious food for family consumption and in school canteens. The contest, does not only focus vegetable gardening but also promotes composting and the use of organic farming technology, Acasio revealed.

There will be two categories for the competition, the barangay category and the school category. Each household with malnourished children are required to have a backyard garden with a minimum of 5 malunggay plants, 5 hills each of green onions, sweet pepper, cabbage, tomato, eggplant and 2 hills of lemon grass and papaya trees, it was noted.

Acasio said that an on-going evaluation is now conducted by their office, the result of which will be announced on the first week of March, this year. They prepared cash prizes for the winners, with P5,000.00 for the first prize, P4,000.00 for the second winner and P3,000.00 for the third placer., each for the barangay and school category. A consolation prize worth P1,000.00 will also be given to each participating barangays and schools, he added.

Some criteria for the judging includes the presence of barangay nursery, communal garden, Barangay Council's support to nutrition program, backyard gardens, for the barangay category. While the school category includes functional school seedling nursery, school garden and demonstrating organic farming technology, functional lunch counter, and others.

For last year's "Magulay ang Bahay" contest, the city agriculture identified only 10 barangays and 10 elementary schools to participate the competition since the budget prepared was lesser. The awardees also received the same prizes prepared for this year's challenge. (rgcadavos, PIA-Soleyte) [top]
